| Deli Klein’s Deli 501 Connecticut @ 20th St Along with over 20 signature sandwiches made with all kinds of fresh cheeses and house-cut meats and named after historically notable women - we like the Rudolph, the Mercedes, the Walker, the McGinn, the Hepburn and the Cunningham - Klein’s also has a great selection of salads, soups and hot dishes like moussaka, broccoli frittata and portobella pie. Get there before 1 p.m. to beat the lunch stampede. |
Thai San Francisco Thai Bar-B-Q 1328 18th St, btwn Texas and Missouri This deceptively unassuming little Thai place serves simple but amazing dishes at very low prices, and offers a rather nice wine selection for $4-5 a glass. Only one item hits the $10 mark, and that’s for a whole chicken! Everything on the menu sounded incredible, but we finally settled on the salad with barbecued sea scallops, the yellow curry, and the salmon fillet with ginger wine sauce. How often can you get three drinks and three huge entrees for under $35? Perfect. |

| Sushi Moshi Moshi 2092 3rd St @ 18th St A hidden gem that probably won’t be hidden for long. Our picks include the ultra-fresh and artfully presented maguro sashimi, the centipede roll - an avocado roll topped with maguro and tobiko ($8.50), the Golden Gate - a crab, avocado and unagi roll topped with sake ($9.50), and the Red Dragon - spicy tuna topped with sake and tobiko ($9.50). Join them for their 20th anniversary celebration on July 24 - enjoy live music with your sushi, and bring canned goods to be donated to the Food Bank. |
Pizza Goat Hill Pizza 300 Connecticut @ 18th St We can’t talk about Potrero Hill without mentioning Goat Hill Pizza. This neighborhood favorite has been serving delicious pizza since 1975. Their selection of toppings is pretty standard, but very fresh, and their sourdough crust and huge salads are outstanding. Add to that an inexpensive wine and beer list and an unpretentious atmosphere - and the fact that they deliver - and you can’t ask for much more … except for maybe all you can eat pizza and salad for $8.95, which happens on Mondays. |

Chinese Garden of Tranquility 2001 17th St @ Kansas Come for lunch and get fresh, delicious and unbelievably cheap Mandarin cuisine. For $5.25, you can’t beat the scallops with garlic sauce; even though the scallops are the smaller bay variety, they’re perfectly soft and tender. We also tried the ma-po bean cake and the kung pao chicken, both $4.50, and the combination appetizer platter, more than enough for two, for $5.95. If the restaurant’s too packed at lunch, dinner is only a few dollars more. |
